Cecil Rhodes Cecil Rhodes Cecil Rhodes
St Pancras Old Church

The family of Rhodes use to farm the land around the church and use to have two family tombs there. In 1890 though Cecil Rhodes had a new Rhodes family tomb built in the cemetery. The massive tomb of red granite on a grey base lists thirty-three members of his family who were originally interred in the old tombs. Additionally, at the south-end of the monument are the words, “Erected to replace two decayed family tombs by C.J.R. 1890”. There are also two inscriptions that were added after Rhodes passed away... they read: “Cecil John Rhodes. Born 5th July 1853. Died at Muizenberg, 26th March 1902. Buried in the Matopo Mountains, Rhodesia”; while the other records the death of his brother Herbert, who died on 21st October 1879, and was buried at Cirales, Lower Shire River, Nyasaland.

The monument (3-sides of it) is shown on BillionGraves and can be seen here: William Rhodes 1774 - 1843 (William was Cecil Rhodes grandfather). Some other family members are also listed on the site and can be searched for... maybe later all thirty-three members in the cemetery will be listed.
